Traffic Simulation Parameters, Merge Configurations, and Capacity Modeling for Freeway Work Zones
This study examined several aspects of the modeling of freeway work zones in order to better inform traffic engineers charged with making decisions on their planning and design. First, different lane closure merge strategies were evaluated across several work zone lengths for a 3-to-1 lane drop configuration using the VISSIM simulation platform. Based on field data from a freeway work zone, default parameters in traffic simulation programs (i.e., truck acceleration capabilities and time headway distributions) were evaluated next and modifications recommended. Finally, this study laid the groundwork for the use of stochastic approaches to determine the capacity of freeway lane closures, so that the probability of breakdown and resultant queuing can be estimated.
