Do you provide any assistance for groups trying to set up a portal using Symbiota? We have been trying to do this with Symbiota for the National Herbarium of Rwanda but really struggled and were told by the designers that they could not help

Thank you

Portal set up -- a one-time thing -- does require considerable expertise and we are available to discuss and hopefully support: https://help.symbiota.org/ (submit a ticket here).

37:38
Great thanks

49:37
Do you differentiate the verbatim determination from assertions made from a link to a name in a look-up hierarchy?

49:54
CMS = collection management system

50:59
Super! Thanks for that. Important for provenance-sake because don't want to misrepresent the determiner's intent.

53:01
If taxonomy in your portal is something you'd like to know more about, we have a recording about the taxonomic thesaurus from the August Symbiota Support Group meeting on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7glMVLRnTA6ES3VTsci7iQ

58:15
How do you handle original determinations (from the label) vs. annotations? If, the most current annotations was the only thing entered for the specimen? Would you use the det. history tab to back fill in the other annotations?

58:44
That happens in lichens all the time. We use two separate occurrence records and for one print out a reference card.

59:57
Thank you!

how long we can “play” with the Sand Box?

01:07:09
There is no time limit!

01:07:21
🥰

01:10:46
What do you recommend for geo-referencing in Latin America? If I remember correctly, Geolocate is more for the USA.

01:13:45
I use Geolocate for Latin America all the time!

01:14:09
Yeah it's not as detailed, but the more its used the more detailed it will become 🙂

01:14:43
GeoLocate works great for Latin America! And if you know the region is much easier :)

01:15:13
Null political units (e.g. country, state, county) used to be populated when a lat/long was entered, but we deactivated this feature once Google increased their pricing. It can be reactivated within a portal, if the managers have funds to support that. Other tools are being developed to add this functionality without relying on for-profit services.

01:15:32
ohh ^^Thank you @k.Samanta

01:15:34
It can give you a good "head start” on your coordinates, even if they are not placed perfectly. Then you can manually refine them.

01:15:39
Can you add linked resources during a bulk cvs file upload?

01:18:54
Could you do a bulk update to specimens or do you have to type this in for each individual specimens?

01:18:59
I pressed the button by mistake

01:21:38
Can I cite these "linked-in" specimen records to Checklists???

01:21:55
There is also a page that listed duplicates within your collections that have a different determination applied within another institution (e.g. specimen might need to be annotated)

01:22:19
… as a voucher in the checklist?

01:22:55
Are the checklists only ones that exist or are made on seinet?

01:22:59
But I am talking about the linked in ones from GBIF etc.

01:23:39
OK, makes sense.

01:24:12
Sorry to digress ;-)

01:29:19
Can you do batch update for a specific set of specimens?

01:30:11
thank you

01:32:18
Would you ever be open to adding an automated indiegnous land tracker using the native-land.ca layers?

01:32:36
that then could be added to plant specimen labels

01:38:43
If you go into custom field and put contains 00 it works to show dates with00

01:39:06
Date - Contains - 00

01:39:59
is there a wildcard like *

01:40:14
I missed the first part of the conversation sorry I just saw the 00

Update on the availability of the "BioDigiCon2022" login for the sandbox -

01:40:53
We will leave this account active through Oct 14. You're welcome to register for your own account on the sandbox (https://biokic4.rc.asu.edu/sandbox/portal/profile/newprofile.php?refurl=/sandbox/portal/index.php?)

01:41:50
@Jamie - If you hover over some of the fields in the search form, an explanation of how to use the wildcard search will appear.

01:45:09
Sorry--got back late: whose workflow is this?

01:45:55
@Donna - Some members of the SERNEC TCN use this workflow.

01:51:05
The trait mining tool translates verbatim text into a standardized trait definition. Trait is phenology in this example, but other trait definitions can be used.

01:59:07
These tags could easily be shared via XMP.

Love this tool - skeletal records

02:12:07
Yes! I use that tool a lot! If you check "All fields" you will also get the taxonomic information copied.

02:12:14
We use “All fields” instead which makes carrying all information.

02:13:01
SCAN is not managed by ASU team.

02:13:02
(I use ecdysis).

02:14:10
we're currently using scan as well, and our collection is live managed and I find it difficult to barcode out insect specimens there as well since we're fully entering label data during barcoding

02:14:40
Is there an advantage to be using ecdysis over SCAN why would we want to leave SAN

02:14:42
SCAN

02:15:37
ecdysis is restricted to live managed collecctions. Going there affords you full SSH services. Snapshot still output to SCAN.

02:16:20
snapshot

02:16:24
yes okay!

02:17:00
I was under the impression they were updating, but I can follow up on this thank you

This has been such an outstanding workshop. It's been extremely helpful. Many thanks!

02:17:43
Thanks so much, great workshop!

02:17:44
Feel free to send an email to Andrew Johnston (ajohnston@asu.edu) about shifting to ecdysis for live management. ajohnston@asu.edu
