I have a question. I have my first every post doc interview on Monday. I asked the professor about what I should prepare and he told me he would ask "a set of standardized questions" and also give me time to ask questions. Do you know what he may ask me? What should I ask him?
Talline Martins
23:08
Hi Lisa, we got your question!

Why academic postdoc is better than industry postdoc for seeking tenure track positions? Will there be any barrier to publish papers when doing an industry postdoc?
Lisa David

I have a friend who is from China but he got a government postdoc at the USDA

What if a PI offered to take you in as a post-doc based on your skills, but not so sure about funding yet. How hard is it to find funding for yourself? Any options other than the NSF fellowship?
Sutonuka Bhar
34:12
What about post docs in hospitals? How common are they and how well paid?
Austin Fife
35:21
How necessary is a postdoc to continue as a researcher? I hear stories of people drifting from postdoc position to position. I mean, I have already spent the last ten years getting a higher education, why can't people get a job after all of that?
Xinsong Du
36:14
Thank you

I haven't seen post docs in the hospital for research scientists but there are jobs for it. But they are advertised just as jobs, not as post docs
Austin Fife
39:32
So why multiple postdocs?
Emma Drobina
41:43
How critical are postdocs if you want to go into government research?
Talline Martins
42:42
Austin, generally people do multiple postdocs if they really want to obtain a faculty position but haven't been able to find one yet. In some fields that are hyper competitive, multiple postdocs are more common because it allows people to keep accumulating publications
Ashlyn Hale
43:02
In general when applying for a postdoc, how similar does it have to be to your own PhD research?
Amanda Catron (she/her)
43:21
Hi Ashlyn! We have your question!

43:31
Thank you! (:

If we do a job after our PhD for a few years, can we do a post doc after that to change our field?
Amanda Catron (she/her)
45:29
Hi Sutonuka! We have your question!
Shamindri Tennakoon
46:03
I was wondering if you have any tips or suggestions for getting a postdoc where the focus (research) is somewhat different from one's dissertation research?
Amanda Catron (she/her)
47:33
Hi Shamindri! Does this answer your question as well?
Shamindri Tennakoon
47:50
Yes, thank you :)
Ashlyn Hale
48:08
Thank you so much!
Sutonuka Bhar
48:51
Thank you.
Nattapol Kraisitudomsook
50:32
what are some of the practical differences between a phd candidate and a postdoc?
Amanda Catron (she/her)
50:50
Hi Nattapol! We have your question!
Lisa David
51:01
It seems like if the job is causing high levels of depression the take home should be to change the academic environment, not to discourage people from their career goals.
Hyojong Sohn
51:14
Would a postdoc experience be helpful when someone negotiates his/her salary/benefit once they got an offer in an institution?
Austin Fife
52:34
Yeah, it sounds like requiring a postdoc create an economic disadvantage for folks who are already struggling
Hyojong Sohn
53:36
Thank you!
Lily Lewis
55:59
Hi Lisa, I completely agree! I think there are a lot of ways that we can improve the academic culture, and I believe it's our future faculty that will be able to do that
Lily Lewis
58:06
Hi Austin, that unfortunately can be the case. A postdoc should be strategic and short. It's not a financial move.
Sutonuka Bhar
01:00:40
I am glad you are talking about this. I have seen people's life turn into hell because of doing post docs with a wrong PI.
Ashlyn Hale
01:02:40
Thank you for this advice! I was also wondering when applying for a postdoc how you can determine if there will be teaching opportunities at the institution? I imagine for tenure track, any prior teaching experience would be helpful (:
Amanda Catron (she/her)
01:02:54
Hi Ashlyn! We have your question!
Sabrina Macias
01:03:27
Thank you so much for the insight. There’s so much to keep track of, it’s a little overwhelming. How do you balance this with trying to finish your dissertation?
Kelsea LeBeau
01:04:12
What is your perspective on doing a postdoc position to ensure that 5 or more years down the road you don’t limit your opportunities as a researcher?
Amanda Catron (she/her)
01:04:33
Hi Sabrina and Kelsea! We have your questions!
Ashlyn Hale
01:04:38
Thank you Sharonda! (:
Melissa Fenton
01:04:44
Do you have any good strategies to share about even finding post docs that are out there? Is there a systematic process that you followed to help you find opportunities?
Amanda Catron (she/her)
01:05:07
Hi Melissa! We have your question!
Sutonuka Bhar
01:05:42
From a job perspective, is a 2-years postdoc better or 5-years?
Xinsong Du
01:06:08
Usually when to start to look for and evaluate a postdoc? Is it one year or half year before Ph.D. graduation?
Shamindri Tennakoon
01:06:08
I was wondering what your thoughts are on postdoctoral teaching fellowships? Are these a good option for those interested in teaching positions in PUIs?
Amanda Catron (she/her)
01:06:09
Hi Sutonuka! We have your question!
Amanda Catron (she/her)
01:07:16
I have collected all of the above questions! :)
Lily Lewis
01:07:38
Sutonuka, two year is better. A postdoc should be short and allow you to move to your desired position
Sutonuka Bhar
01:08:07
Thanks!
Lisa David
01:08:42
At what point do you ask about salary?
Lily Lewis
01:09:24
Shamindri, teaching postdocs are great to prepare you for a teaching focused career. Also good to talk to people at PUIs to see what they recommend. If you can move directly into a PUI that would be in your best interest. You could apply to teaching postdocs as a backup plan and to make you more competitive if necessary.
Amanda Catron (she/her)
01:09:35
Hi Lisa! I have your question!
Shamindri Tennakoon
01:09:58

01:11:19
After Postdoc, is it possible to jump into the industry instead of academic positions?
Lily Lewis
01:11:29
Lisa, I would ask once you feel that the position may be a good in other respects. I.e. once you get past the intial assessment of the position
Lily Lewis
01:11:46
(pardon the typos :)
Amanda Catron (she/her)
01:11:51

If a postdoc is to develop new skills, expecting postdocs to be fully independent from study design to execution in 2 years seems like too much
Selena Garrison
01:16:00
I am somewhat location-bound for a postdoc due to family circumstances. I am in the social sciences, and the lab I currently work in deals with childhood trauma and resilience, parental stress, child-welfare policy, etc. Do you find many postdocs available that are not location-bound? (Remote work, etc?)
Kelsea LeBeau
01:16:15
Yes! Thank you so much for the feedback and advice! Both of you!
Lily Lewis
01:16:21
Ruethaiwan, yes, but this may not be in your best financial interest. I would try to go directly into industry if that's where you want to go. If industry is a plan b, then I would do things during your postdoc to demonstrate that moving to industry is intentional and not a second choice
Amanda Catron (she/her)

How do you sell yourself to a PI if you’re only academically “average”, i.e. no grants, no papers, etc.
Lily Lewis
01:18:08
Selena, Yes, the remote postdoc is becoming much more common, especially if you are mostly working with data mining, or data that already exists.
Selena Garrison
01:18:32
Thank you, Lily.

Sabrina, I would focus on what you bring to the PI's project and the lab. Don't undervalue yourself and fall into a postdoc position that is actually a technician role
