A Better Understanding of Shopping Travel in the US
STRIDE Webinar

Matt Bhagat-Conway, Ph.D, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Shopping is an essential maintenance activity that generates multiple trips per week for most households. About 70% of shopping trips occur as part of trip chains, making assessing the total travel associated with shopping challenging, because it is not immediately clear how to distribute travel distances between shopping and other activities. This research estimates marginal distances for shopping trips using counterfactual tours with shopping removed to find how much additional distance is attributable to shopping. We find that total travel distance is approximately half what it would be if every trip to the store were a round trip from home. This provides a valuable baseline for studies of the transport impact of a transition to online shopping.
